Writing Workshops
We Write To Heal.
Trauma-informed writing workshops are at the heart of what we do. Through writing and self-expression, Authors Inside offers a path toward healing and sustainable change for at-risk youth, teens, young adults, and adults impacted by the justice system.
Our writing workshops consist of a sequence of facilitated writing sessions designed to support reflection, emotional expression, accountability, and communication skills. Sessions are led by trained facilitators and guided by prompts that encourage participants to explore personal experiences, choices, identity, and future goals.

Our writing workshops are held in person at the California Men’s Colony and are available to all who are impacted by the justice system: adult offenders, youth offenders, families of incarcerated individuals, and victims. We encourage individuals to reflect on and write about their experiences through bi-weekly sessions that span 4-6 months. Our focus during these sessions is to build trust and connection, and to help individuals develop insight, strengthen their communication skills, and envision positive futures—all which contribute to crime prevention and reducing recidivism.
We are also developing community writing workshops to extend our resources into alternative schools and other spaces for at-risk youth.
Our workbooks, available for purchase on Amazon, are a great resource that pair well with our workshops and can help guide participants through their writing process.
If you’re interested in our course but are not local in the San Luis Obispo area, we also offer a 6-month mail-in course. It utilizes our workbook modules and worksheets that we will mail to you, to be completed on your own.
